What you’re about to see are the digital ghosts of handmade photographs. I work in cyanotype, tintype, and albumen, mixing my own chemicals, coating paper by hand, dipping metal plates in silver baths. These are methods nearly as old as photography itself: the photographic equivalent of cave painting.

So why bother?

Making pictures by hand is the most intimate, most visceral means of photographic expression. Turning sheets of blank paper and jars of chemistry into photographs feels like alchemy. It brings the photographer back to the sense of magic that lured most of us into photography in the first place.
